Memories of Birmingham - Vulcan Back
Next: Monkey Island

Vulcan, the World's Largest Iron Man

The Ailing Vulcan It appears that Vulcan is sick again, and since his dropsy is catching, the entire park is closed for now. As I heard it, the statue was filled with concrete that expanded and cracked Vulcan apart. I don't think Birmingham has any choice but to go ahead and fix it, so there's a good bet this early John Travolta will come back better than ever.

August 2003 update: According to my Ga. Tech alumni magazine, 'Vulcan has returned to Red Mountain, the bird nests pulled from his hollow head, the cracks repaired in the cast-iron body and his skin tone restored to its original medium gray - even on the naked backside that has mooned part of Birmingham, Ala. for six decades.' Congrats to City and restorers for a job well done!
